Thecabinet accorded approval for the Central Sector Scheme for Rehabilitation ofManual Scavengers in December, 2006.The Cabinet has directed that the scheme be administered as a national priority with a resolute sense of purpose for surmountingany obstacles in implementation.The Scheme for Rehabilitation of Manual Scavengers (SRMS) proposes torehabilitate the remaining 3,42,468 Manual Scavengers including theirdependents in the country, in a time bound manner.

Asper the instructions of the M0SJ&E, Govt. of India, NSFDC, inter-alia ,has to supplement the effort of National SafaiKarmchari Finance&Development Corp. (NSKFDC) for implementation of SRMS Schemes forRehabilitation of the Manual Scavengers&their dependents.

1.	Statesallocated to NSFDC under SRMS :
		Assam , Bihar, Chhatisgarh , Haryana , Himachal Pradesh, Kerala ,Punjab andWestBengal
2.	Statesreported asManaual Scavenger free:
		Chhatisgarh ,Haryana , Kerala andPunjab
3.	Statesbeing covered by NSFDC under SRMS:
		Assam , Bihar, Himachal Pradesh,&WestBengal
